Sentinel

Geoscience Australia will begin hosting the Sentinel fire watch website in December. CSIRO, which currently runs the site, will pull out of the operation in the new year.

The move reflects the evolution of the Sentinel technology - which was developed by CSIRO - to a production environment.

The site uses the same data and technology as the Firewatch site run by the Department of Land Information in Perth.

It uses data from the MODIS instrument on NASA's Aqua and Terra satellites to identify hotspots from their thermal emissions.

The data is now a regular part of firefighting operations across Australia.
