In Search Of Augustus Alt

The Department of Lands in Sydney is hunting for a picture of the first surveyor general of the state, Augustus Alt.

The picture is needed for a new book that is being published by the department next year. The book will celebrate the lives of all the surveyors general from 1788.

Alt was appointed in London and sailed in the first fleet. However, no depiction of him has been found, either in colonial records in London, or among his descendants in Europe, or Australia.

Anyone with information on Alt, or possible pictures of the Great Man, should contact the current surveyor general, Paul Harcombe, Paul Harcombe or Sydney surveyor John Brock John Brock who is writing the book.
